12.01.11. We have recently lost a long standing member of our Lane. He was a very quiet individual who had run a model shop at Heanor for most of his life. Because he died just before Christmas, we didn't hear of his death until we read the long informative obituary in the paper. We were surprised to read that he was trained as a gemmologist and had held a pilot's licence. What we did know about was his love of flying model airplanes. Every summer he held a model airplane flying party in the field he owned on the Lane. We were always relieved when it finished and the whiney noise ceased, but I think we also envied him. What could be better than being able to fly model airplanes every day when you retire!
A couple of years back, he and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and we all attended a get together at their house. We were surprised to find that they had spent the previous night in a tent on the lawn, just as they had spent their first married night together. (In a tent, not on their lawn).
Our own memory of him will be the day Robert was doing revision work for his 'A' Levels in his room. We were conscious that a model airplane was being flown outside, but thought nothing of it - until there was a massive bang on the brickwork next to where Robert was sitting. The airplane had flown smack into the side of the house, missing the window by a few inches. When the plane was eventually retrieved, there was no apology, just a quiet mumble about it being a right-off...
