29.06.11. Just off the train at St Pancras and was lucky enough to see these lads with jackets matching the colours of the Olympic rings.

Birmingham School Of Jewellery Degree Show, 18.06.11

18.06.11. Lots of Degree Shows on this week and last. Really nice to have an invitation to go and view the work of the students at the Birmingham School Of Jewellery.

From Start To Finish...

04.06.11. Theresa Nguyen is 'artist in residence' at Kedleston Hall until October 2011. Her work is truly inspirational - what was a sheet of metal has been fashioned into something all together organic...

June 2010

01.06.11. Always a busy time at the beginning of the month. Invoices to prepare, stats to calculate and today my next acupuncture appointment at the hospital. –Usually a calm affair, but today my nurse practioner was anything but calm as acupuncture sessions may be shelved as part of the NHS cuts.

02.06.11. Busy day leading up to a meal at Darley’s. Graham’s new boss was staying over and I was invited along. Lovely meal, great company.

03.06.11. Attended first of four free weekly concerts in Derby Cathedral. Was so please I made the effort. All had won their section at the Derby Art’s Festival. Also met up with a tutor I used to see regularly, but has since retired – nice coincidence.

04.06.11. Blustery and overcast day. Had lunch at Denby Pottery, then a trip to Kedleston Hall to see silversmith artist in residence – Theresa Nguyen. Breathtaking work and such a lovely person to talk to – Graham was quite smitten…

05.06.11. Went to see my parents and spent the day with them. Saddening to see that my mother’s condition has deteriorated so much that she feels unable to play the piano any more. Home 8.15pm

06.06.11. Teaching Button jewellery at a centre in Mackworth which runs a Monday morning get together for young mums. Unfortunately making their own jewellery didn’t hold an attraction for them and only one came. Luckily she had brought her sister and there were two helpers, so we had a good time – very bijoux.

08.06.11. Graham in Plymouth. Went to talk at the Quad given by picture editor at Derby Evening Telegraph, Victoria Wilcox. Victoria has a very engaging personality and gave a very informative and entertaining talk. The idea was to send in photos she could talk about, so I sent in my one from Cambridge with the student playing a guitar in a litter bin. It ‘went down’ very well, but unfortunately it was the only one submitted. One girl had travelled up from Brighton to attend the talk and spent much of the 2 hours questioning Victoria – all interesting stuff. Other photographers from the paper; Kate and Matt, and Michelle who has just completed an HND at South Derbyshire College. She gets commissioned to take photos when everyone else is busy.

09.06.11. Third Recycled jewellery class at Mickleover Library. Over half term one of the learners had been very busy making crocheted plarn bracelets – so pleased she has been inspired through attending my class.

10.06.11. Was asked to help promote classes at AgeUK in Eagle Centre from 10.30am. Was good fun to take part and not have to worry about ‘agenda’. Other people there, Quad, Coach Tours and advice about sexual health for the over 50s… Dashed back to car, picked up camera and headed to Cathedral to see second concert. – Derby Piano Quartet. Eight hands, two pianos, great fun.

11.06.11. Was due to be teaching a book and calligraphy course at the Eco Centre this weekend, but it was cancelled due to low numbers. Good that a couple of people had booked. Instead spent the day trying to get hold of a webdesigner to redesign the website. Thought I'd found a possible contender, sounded like a really competent chappy, estimate £6-9000…
13.06.11. Piano lessons all morning, went to Eco Centre in afternoon and met with manager to discuss possible Eco sessions/days connected with Campaign For Wool. The idea is OK, but not sure how to make it happen.
14.06.11. Dentist first thing to have crown fitted (£204) then quick trip to check out a possible workshop venue, has good points and bad
15.06.11. Had approach from someone at Topshop wanting team of knitters. Said could post request now not so sure.
16.06.11. Recycled Jewellery at Mickleover, was tired, late and when I got there found I was to be observed. We had to make do with tiny room, two learners were really late, couldn’t do project as learner had not brought material, learner left early, had to get out early as room booked for someone else. All in all not the best morning… However, my photo published in Derby Evening Telegraph to help promote the concerts in the Cathedral – looked great! Had visit from Les at 5.30pm on way home from a funeral. Great to see him again! Went for meal at Spotted Cow, Holbrook – very civilised, lovely meal.
17.06.11. Went to third concert in the Cathedral. Attenborough Quartet. Piano, Violin, viola, cello. Some lovely chamber music and finished with ‘Pennies From Heaven’, what a wonderful arrangement. Rained from 4pm. Did shopping then set off at 10 past 6 for Southall to go to another concert. Amazing place – absolutely beautiful! The Great Hall was the venue and it was round the back on the minster. Didn’t matter what the music was like…the music was in the same vein as the earlier concert, but with more accomplished musicians. Lovely that my photos were exchanged for tickets.
18.06.11. What better way to spend a Saturday morning than at a tutor meeting and strangely covering the ‘same old same old’. Came home very upset. Caught train to Birmingham at 5pm and had a relaxing ride. Taxi from station to School of Jewellery and a look at the student’s degree show in company of Les and Sandra.
19.06.11. Sold a bag on Etsy this week, so ended up spending the day making some more bags, I’d forgotten how long they take to make and how much fun it is making things.

Botanical Gardens, Cambridge

07.05.11. These gardens are beautifully laid out and well worth a visit.

Wish You Were Here...

02.05.11. My picture postcard.

Masson Mills, Matlock Bath

02.05.11. Went to Cromford Mill to help give out information about The Eco Centre and then had a lovely walk to Matlock Bath. Masson Mills looked so photogenic in the sunshine against the blue sky.

Radcliffe Camera

01.05.11. Oxford is awash with beautiful buildings to photograph. Looking at the photos I've put on Flickr, it's clear I need to plan my next visit and pay more attention to time of day and interesting angles...

May 2011
01.05.11. Began the month by taking Lucy back to Oxford and spending a great day out there. First we took her things back to her bedsit (converted attic at the top of a house in the centre of Oxford) and parked the car - no restrictions as it was a Sunday. Lovely warm day, so changed into my Oxford outfit, white skirt and matching top and then walked into Oxford. The walk 'in' was just delightful. Down one residential road, across rolling fields with a river meandering through them. There were people boating, ducks with their newly hatched duckling, all quite idyllic. Eventually we arrived at the cafe Lucy had selected, not my ideal choice, but filling in a special way. Afterwards we made our way to the castle and climbed up the castle mound having handed over £1 each for the privilege. By then we'd earned a cup of tea, Lucy insisted we had a chocolate brownie as well, naughty but very nice! A quick tour of the shops was followed by the scenic way 'home' via the punting station - we got lost in the meadow (my fault), then needed another cup of tea and all too soon it was time to head home.
02.05.11.
May Day Bank holiday, so no piano lessons, but a whole day spent on the website.
03.05.11. Another trip to the dentist. I think my tooth has cracked and split although the dentist was unable to find any evidence - it hurts if I breath on it... Has arranged for me to have a crown (only £200) not convinced that this will solve the problem - we can but hope... Came home via Croots and bought two ham joints.
03.05.11. Had to make trips out to two different centres to collect registers for two new classes starting this week..
04.05.11. Arrived at library to take class only to find all they knew was that the room had been booked, but had overlooked publicising the session for their users. Plan B is to re-start during Adult learner's week. Spoke to Line Manager who felt that the people who had liaised with the Library Service had let us down - couldn't agree more...
05.05.11. After yesterday's 'let down', didn't expect anyone to know I was even coming. The library staff were much more accommodating and apologetic, but there were no learners. Took a few flyer to neighbouring shops and went back to centre to talk things through with my Line Manager. Retailer therapy required after that!
06.05.11. As Graham was still away spent the day in Cambridge with Robert. Arrived just after 12 - took over 2 hours to get there. Very warm, had lunch outside - took ages, but we had the opportunity for a chat. When we'd finished, we had a walk round the Botanical Gardens (£4 entrance each) by this time the sky had become very overcast, although having now looked at my photos, it was ideal light for taking photos of flowers. This was followed by a drink/ice cream which fuelled us for a walk around town and to a gallery which closed as we arrived. Back into town and then a rush to the nearest tea shop during a shower of rain. Back at Robert's house he showed me his photos from his holiday last week in Norway/Sweden - amazing pics, especially those of a fiord. On the way back there was a long detour as the M1 was shut - should have paid more attention on the way there!
09.05.11. Thought I was teaching, so had cancelled my piano lessons for this morning and then found the dates had changed - (pulls face)
10.05.11. Spent whole of afternoon ringing round getting logos for banner being made. Tap class was a welcome break.
12.05.11. When we were away to Italy for my birthday, I found out that Lang Lang was coming to Nottingham in May and we booked tickets over the internet. At last, the great day had arrived. Lang Lang's playing was amazing - it brought a whole new meaning the the words 'touch sensitive', however, the choice of pieces was a little disappointing, coupled with a chap in front of us having a heart attack 20 minutes into the performance didn't make for the best evening's entertainment. Luckily Lang Lang was persuaded to play two encores - still he chose two more pieces I didn't recognise, Chopin (how could I not know one of Chopin's pieces?) and Dedication, a song by Schumann, arranged by Liszt - honey to your ears...
13.05.11. Had hair cut and spoke to a few people asking advice about what to charge for some photos that have been published.
15.05.11. Up early and on my way for 8am. Today I was heading for Stoneleigh Park to help at a Trade Show. It was very nostalgic driving up the lanes inside the park which I previously knew from my annual visit to The Royal Show. Another victim of the recession/change in people's values. The buildings are already beginning to look very tired, although every effort has been made to make a go in park now being a conference centre. I had to smile when the other signs were for a 'Grassland and Muck Event'. By 10am the place was buzzing and although we came up for air at 2pm for lunch, I didn't see the light of day again until it was time to go home. I say 'home', we were all booked into a very nice Village Hotel in Coventry, although it took so long to get there, I could easily have been half way home in the same time. However, as I said it was a lovely hotel, I had a very quiet room with a double bed and as many soft pillows as I could balance on top of each other. It did take me 20 minutes to realise that I hadn't pushed the card right down to get any electric, but it was all a learning curve. I had a three course dinner with Ann and Chris, where most of the talk was related to the weekend. All the reps were also having dinner in the hotel, so when a big 'whoop' and clattered went up we were sure what was happening until someone mentioned that on comparing who had made the biggest sale of the day, one of the girls had managed to sell 3.5kilos, a record even I could understand.
16.05.11. The second day being a Monday was a little quieter especially after lunch, which was good as it left me time to take some photos. Then it was 5pm and time for the whole place to be taken apart and loaded into awaiting vans. Luckily there was enough to do in our room so that no one noticed that I can't carry anything. Home to an empty house (Graham in Plymouth until tomorrow) arriving 7.45pm
17.05.11. Lots to do on the website and 5 piano pupils to teach. A phone call from a new adult learner to cancel until after Christmas (?) was not unexpected. Escape to tap class, most welcome.
19.05.11. New Recycled Jewellery Class at Mickleover Library started today. My Line Manager came to collect fees and was very good at mixing with the learners with telling anecdotes of her daughter. I had 5 learners which normally wouldn't be enough, but because of the recession/mix up etc, it will be allowed to run - phew...
20.05.11. New Recycled Jewellery Class at Alvaston Library, no one turned up, this was not unexpected, but disappointing never the less. Librarian has suggested a taster session. Emails duly sent.
22.05.11. Woke up fine, but as the morning progressed realised I had a real problem with Hermione to the point where I was unable to bend forward or lift anything all day. Went for a long walk after lunch hoping it would free things up, but had little or no effect. After thinking that I had no need for any further acupuncture sessions I am so thankful that I am due for my next session this Wednesday.
23.05.11. Phonecall from Eco Centre to say class cancelled, but managed to persuade a turn around - as I explained they would be paying me anyway...
24.05.11. Took class at Eco Centre, great to see previous students, one of which had brought her daughter along, but as there were no others, this class will not be running. Saw another Line Manager there, the upshot being, she has offered me a class in Somercotes, so being in the right place at the right time has paid off. I feel elated that somebody wants me! Tap class - the last session for a German girl who has been coning this half term. She enters competitions in Germany and spent the last 20 minutes teaching us one of her style tap routines. It was great - built on rhythm and learnt 'step by step', very different from our type of tap!
25.05.11. One piano pupil, then off to the Derby Royal for 12pm. My nurse who is usually difficult to engage in conversation went on and on about how no one's job is safe. A sad but true statement. Apparently there is an important meeting on Friday when it is rumoured that the axe will fall on all acupuncture sessions. I know I have been very lucky to have had them free up till now... Back home for lunch and then off to the dentist for the preparation for a new crown. Unfortunately, I do not think that having a crown will sort my tooth out. Next appointment is on 14th June, so will have to wait and see - crossing my fingers may help in the circumstances...
26.05.11. Second session at Mickleover Library. One of the students has just been voted out of being a local councillor, which she has held for the last 9 years, so is understandably at a bit of a lose end. She came with reels of plarn and four bracelets she had made since last week - great to know that my class - running by the skin of it's teeth has managed to make a small difference in her life...Robert had appointment with dentist at 3.30pm and came home very happy, all sorted. We two went and collected Lucy from the train station at 7pm.
27.05.11. Took Lucy to a dentist appointment for 9.40am and then she spent the rest of the morning at the Oxfam shop. Met up at 2.00pm and went shopping.
28.05.11.Lucy went off to spend the day with Steven. Graham stayed at home and worked on his bikes. Robert and I went first to Harley Gallery to see the Smile Exhibition there and have a nice lunch, then off up to Wakefield to see The Hepworth Gallery. Really frustrating as there was a brand new car park opposite the Gallery, but you weren't allowed to use it. Instead there were two blokes letting busses in from the Park and Ride which everyone was directed to. Not being good at taking 'stupid instructions' we followed the bus, but parked in a shop car park and made sure we were back in the allotted 1 and a half hours. Then we re-parked in a car park which was near to the gallery and went back for a cup of tea and piece of very enjoyable chocolate brownie. The Gallery? Sure, it was interesting and had some thought provoking items to view. You weren't allowed to take photos inside, although I did take some from the windows out. We also walked to the church on the bridge and had a look inside as a paintings exhibition was just packing up. Then we walked into town and up to the older part of town where we found some magical architecture. If it hadn't have been so windy it would have been a great day! Home 7.15pm.

Sunset At Challaborough Bay...

Spring Has Sprung...

06.04.11. Amazing sky this afternoon making the Blackthorn blossom appear even whiter

April 2011
01.04.11. Another new month and another invoice to be sent off. Busy day trying to organise a room to take a class in (doesn't look as thought it will happen) and buying materials for next week's teaching. Went to the local wholesaler for buttons only to find that they didn't have any suitable. Thought my luck had reached an all time low, but when I made enquiries, it turned out the rep was there and he assured me that new tubs would be there waiting for me in all the colours I wanted by Monday lunchtime.
02.04.11. Saturday lunch at Denby Pottery. Another nice meal (two in a row) of Chinese Pork Pie (think the order of words needs altering!)
03.04.11. Mother's Day today. Was very disappointed that neither offspring managed to send me a card, let alone flowers...Spent the day with my parents. My sister and her husband were there and two of her children came for Sunday dinner, complete with Mother's Day cards...
04.04.11. Spoke at length with a lady who is coming to observe me at the Fun Day on Saturday (will be less of a 'Fun' Day). Collected buttons after lunch - had so many colours to choose from had difficulty making up my mind. Contacted class to say there would be no class as I couldn't find a room and then had a phone call from the local library to say we meet there at minimal cost - isn't life depressing sometimes. Hadn't the heart to start trying to ring everyone back.
05.04.11. Spent much of today writing a lesson plan for Saturday and checking that I know exactly what I am doing and why. Tap class was a welcome relief.
07.04.11. Took my camera in to have sensor cleaned (just out of warrantee, but they did it for free or would have cost £80) Collected it at 4.00pm. On reflection, feel I have made a big mistake...
08.04.11. REceived email late in the evening to say that my adult pupil has passed Grade 2 with 112 - excellent result!
09.04.11. Fun Day at local school. Beautifully sunny and warm day. Less children seen than last year, may be the good weather kept them away. Was observed and everything went smoothly, observer helped out at busy times which was good of her. Was happy with what she saw and awarded me a Grade 2, which I'm happy with. She made the suggestion that perhaps I could have had some instructions written down for busy times when I can't get to the people quick enough. Arrived home 1.30pm and had lunch outside. Jumped back in the car and sped off to Oxford and picked up Lucy and went to view a house (first floor flat) in Wheatley. The village is wonderful, the amenities are wonderful, everything is wonderful except the flat has a flat roof, night storage heaters and the price... Lucy has set her heart in it, we'll just have to see...
10.04.11. Breathed a sigh of relief that the weather was again hot and sunny and we could spend all day outside pottering in the garden. Planted sweet corn, beans and sunflowers for Lucy's new patio.
15.04.11. Rest of week has just flown getting things ready in preparation for our first holiday of the year. Graham's work is now based in Plymouth (from February 2010), but I hadn't visited the area. So we have rented a house and set off today in my car, so I can have something to run around in while Graham is at work. Very overcast day, but felt warm as the air was so still. Set off around 11.00am and stopped for lunch at Tyntesfield, newly opened National Trust place. The restaurant is in the stables, all the walls are newly whitewashed and you sit at tables with a manger in the corner - great! Food was divine, even though my tooth is playing up big time. The house wasn't opened today, but we had a lovely stroll round. The family made its fortune from guano (like many others) and the buildings were breathtakingly beautifully - can't wait to visit again. Of we went again, stopping for tea and cake, this time at Killerton another National Trust estate (you'll see a theme emerging). Amazingly, the house is painted orange - all because it has a magnificent wisteria which was just coming into bloom. Other flowers in the extensive garden were equally stunning, so the fact that the light was dull and flat was a little frustrating.
We eventually arrived at our 'new home' around 7.30pm, collected some milk from the local Tesco threw our bags in and made for the nearest beach. We ate a picnic tea in the car and went for a short walk to the headland. Across the bay was a small island and we were intrigued to see a huge illuminated hotel - the only building visible. Time to make tracks and 'google' our find.
16.04.11. Because we came down on a Friday, we decided that a Saturday would be the quiestest day to spend at The Eden Project. Again it was a very mild dull cloudy day. I'm not sure what I expected from The Eden Project. I thought it would be bigger and more eco-friendly. It is an amazing place with lots to see/do/experience, but it is run to entertain rather than educate. However, it was a good day out and I'd love to go again. We left about 5pm and then stopped off at Plymouth and were treated to a spectacular sunset. The grey clouds parted and let in the most amazing light.
17.04.11. Today was Graham's choice to go to the seaside. It was really sunny, quite warm if a little windy. We drove first to Torquay and had a lovely walk round watching boats in the harbour and hardy holiday makers going for boat trips (brrrr!) I had half expected to see tall men thrashing small cars, but we didn't spot any on our way in (Flowery Tarts?) Next we saw the delights of Paignton, memorable only for its colourful beach huts. A small detour on the way home led us to Burgh Island, to see the hotel we had spotted on our first evening. Graham had found out that the hotel rates start at £385 a night and was already planning his stay. What we hadn't planned for was our next meal and we managed to arrive just as everything was shutting up. Not wanting to forego an interesting walk, I persuaded him to come with me along a sandy path which seemed quite popular with everyone else and seemed to lead to the next cove. As with many situations, as one door closes, another one opens, the path led to a caravan site complete with pub and restaurant where we ordered a pleasant meal and watched the sun go down.
18.04.11. Monday was an early morning as I needed to get up and take Graham to the car hire place on his way to work. By 9o'clock I was parked up at the Hoe, watching the inhabitants of Plymouth running, dog walking, cycling etc along the sea front. We all departed at precisely at 10.00am when the car parking charges came into force. Then I made my way to Drake Circus shopping centre, credit card in hand, convinced that the clothes I had brought were not suitable for the unseasonal summer weather. I was much happier once I had found the local Primark and purchased two tops, a skirt and a pair of Capri trousers for £25. Next I found Saltram House (the nearest National Trust place) and ate my sandwiches, answered emails and made some phone calls while watching a set of twins playing in the long grass together. Being alone in a beautiful place was not so bad after all. Saltram House is lovely, but very similar in many ways to Kedleston Hall - both have rooms designed by Robert Adams. I arrived home at 5.15 and Graham not long after. I cooked us some simple tea and then I persuaded Graham to go for a walk around Aveton Gafford, a mile or two down the road where the road disappears under water at high tide, very odd...
19.04.11. Today, Graham went off to work and I went to Exeter for the day to meet up with two college friends. Kimberley, who lives and teaches in Weymouth and Julie who lives in nearby Crediton. I hadn't seen Julie in 30 years, but once we three were back together, it was as though all those years had melted away - we have resolved to try and meet up again soon, especially as I now have a reason to be 'down there'. I arrived back around 5 and with a 'quick' turn around we were out of the house for 7 and on our way back to Plymouth to have dinner with Graham's boss. By now, (Tuesday) - it was warm enough to wear skirt and light jacket, appropriate too for the poshest restaurant in Plymouth. Called Tanners Restaurant, it was launched by Chris and James Tanner (one of whom regularly cooks on TV - no, I've not seen him either) If the place was anything to go by (originally the Treasury) then the food was going to be marvellous - and it was. I was going to describe the food, but perhaps best to read the menu - when can I go again?! Even my constant toothache couldn't spoil it for me.
20.04.11. Wednesday dawned bright and warm. A whole day in front of me - the world was my oyster. First I washed my hair then jumped in the car and set off for Buckland Abbey which Kimberley had recommended to me yesterday. It seemed to take ages to get past Plymouth, but just before I turned off I saw my first glimpse of Dartmoor - and I was smitten.
Buckland Abbey is a wonderful place, built by the Cistern Monks in the 1400s, it is steeped in history and entwined with the fortunes of Sir Francis Drake. It nestles in a hollow which captures the sun and at this time of year plays host to a myriad of tulips, rhododendrons and wisteria. I left at half 4 and made my way back to Plymouth to meet Graham at the car hire place. We then back-tracked and headed for Dartmoor, stopping off at Two Bridges for a steak meal al fresco and a long walk up the hill and into the sunset...
21.04.11. Today I felt guilty about being away from home-all I could think about was the work piling up on the website. Graham was very amenable and agreed that we should go home a day early and besides, the traffic would probably be lighter if we travelled today. So, we packed up, cleaned the house and set the Sat Nav for Castle Drogo for our National Trust lunch stop. The weather was still lovely and warm, so we had an enjoyable time at Castle Drogo and lunch outside. I have to say I was surprised at the starkness of the building, but loved the contents inside. The guides were happy to let visitors play the numerous pianos, so although I didn't have a go there was an 10/11(?) year old girl who delighted at playing her Grade 4 pieces to everyone - she was very good! All too soon it was time to head back to the car and set off in the direction of Derby. We arrived just in time to go and collect Lucy from the station. She has a whole 10 days off work what with Bank Holidays/Easter/Royal Wedding etc
22.04.11. First catch up day with the website.
25.04.11. Did some bike riding up and down the lane, managed to hurt foot.
26.04.11. Today was the first of two days spent at The Quad on a free photographic course. Arrived early to find the doors firmly locked, so sought refuge in the covered market until nearer 9.30am (difficult as foot still very painful). Also had to change seats as the air conditioning was so fierce, but besides those minor details everything went very smoothly. There were 12 all together age range 20-60 and wide range of ability too. Two sets of partners (one girl was deaf and whose partner signed relentlessly for her - such dedication) girl who made headdresses and partner who painted watercolours. Lad still at Uni and into time lapse movie making, girl who works at Deda (arranged to contact her to take photos of dancers), newly retired now hopes to set up in consultancy (can't remember what type of work), henna painter who specialises in weddings (has since been in the paper), girl who works at The Quad. First we were sent out to take some photos and come back, download them and show to others - freezing outside. Took so long, coffee break, allowed up to £10 per day free refreshments. Brief chat about 'Rule of Thirds' sent out again to take photos to demonstrate this rule. Lunch. Looked at each others photos and discussed what we'd like to do tomorrow.
27.04.11. Began with introduction of how to use certain things in Photoshop CS3. Chose a photo from yesterday, moved part of it into another photo and cloned out excess. Coffee break. Further work in photoshop. Lunch. Took some photos using studio lighting - so hot 2 x 500w bulbs. The difference was obvious what you can do with strong lighting. Tea break. Showed selection of photos that we'd altered using Photoshop, exchanged contact details, said our 'goodbyes' and went home.
28.04.11. Had phone interview with Katrina my acupuncturist at the hospital. I am booked in for one more session, but have been warned that due to cuts this may be the last time. Went to town in afternoon with Lucy - to take posters to visitor's centre, library etc. Dress rehearsal for Tap Dance at Derby Arts Festival. Didn't go brilliantly, but felt a bit more confident for tomorrow, just hope foot bares up.
29.04.11. Graham flew off to Chicago, Emma came and collected Lucy to watch The Royal wedding with Steven's family and I watched the whole event on my own, mostly with tears streaming down my face. Loved everything except the tree in Westminster Abbey...'why?'... Took photos from the television! Lucy home about 3pm. Went down and had a quick chat to people at our Royal Wedding party, took a few photos and came home. Emailed a photo to the paper and then packed up and went to The Guildhall. Performance went very well - one of the other dancers commented that I looked like I was enjoying it - what a complement. We came joint third (85) - can't win 'em all!
30.04.11. Lucy wanted to go shopping in Meadowhall and I wanted to visit The Harley Gallery. So we compromised and went to both, lovely lunch at the Gallery - bought a dress from Oasis. Glad to get home.

A Face For Tomorrow

25.03.11. Took my DSLR with me to the NEC (Sewing For Pleasure) to take some pictures of our stand and anything else 'photogenic'. Was really pleased with the results from the Fashion Show "Creativity On The Catwalk". All the clothes were made by the students and modelled by them as well.

Jeff Moore, Guardian Press Desk Day, The Quad

12.03.11. We learned how images are submitted to a newspaper, the stories behind some famous images and were treated to an excellent lunch. Great day out at The Quad!

Cromford Mill, Late Afternoon...

06.03.11. First sunny afternoon in ages, so out with my camera. Lots of people were there - they have been cloned out of this photo!

Flower Power....

Amaryllis, Dual by Geraldine Curtis
Amaryllis, Dual a photo by Geraldine Curtis on Flickr.

02.03.11. There was a time when I didn't think my Amaryllis bulb was going to grow any flowers. It has now produced four of the most wonderful blooms - I feel like a proud parent!

March 2011
02.03.11: It wouldn't be right for a week to pass without an obligatory trip to the dentist. Today I had a root filing done on the tooth which was causing a problem a fortnight ago. Lucky I like soup!
03.03.11: Debbie from Tap phoned first thing to say she needed some presents and would I like to come to The Bottle Kiln for a coffee with her. - Jumped at the chance, but when I got back found that Id missed one of my piano pupils - whoops!
Have had some interest in my photos from a marketing firm in London who produce a magazine about regeneration in the East Midlands called 'Perspective'. They have sent me a copy of the magazine and it is beautiful, both in terms of quality of photography and quality of paper used. I should be happy to have them think my photos are worthy (even if they don't intend to pay me). They may yet not be chosen, one can but hope. Have seen on Twitter that free 'Creative' courses are available for Quad, for people who live or work in Derby. You have to attend two days of training - still waiting to hear back.
04.02.11: New Jewellery class at Village Centre. As anticipated it isn't going to run due to lack of students, however, three more attended than I thought would come.
Missed the big Conference on Format's opening day, but was consoled by the fact that one one my photos was published in the Derby Evening Telegraph.
05.03.11: Big day today, Tap demonstration at The Roundhouse in Derby. Don't know if I was more excited about finally seeing the inside of this building, or about tapping in front of an audience. Met up as planned, got changed in the classroom upstairs, went through the routine as best we could in the space available and went downstairs to wait our turn. Everything seemed to be running on time and then the organisers decided that a group from London who had missed their slot should be fitted in before us. We couldn't really hear what they were singing/reciting, but one of the girls had some amazing shoes! Our routine went really well with the 7 of us. Dancing on railway sleepers is not something I would chose to do, but hey, there's a first time for everything! Afterwards, I took quite a few photos, went on a tour (a bit disappointing as they had run out of guides) and had a chat with the people on the Fairtrade, WI and Quad stands. The event was just about to finish around 4pm, so I made my way over to the front of the Railway station and waited for Graham to come and pick me up. Quite a good day considering it had rained all day.
06.03.11: Our first glimpse of sunshine in over a week. After lunch, drove to Cromford Mill and took some photos of the Mill complex and the railway station with its new building.
07.03.11. Normal Monday - lots to do on website. Had to chase up people to get an entry on DACES Moodle, to put up student's work. Lesson went well, Twisted Stranded Bracelet home around 9.00pm.
08.03.11. First draft of new newsletter to sort out. Went to town to put cheque in bank. Visited Format Exhibition in The Quad and also the Ark shop in Sadler gate. Same shop that we did craft sessions in in December. (?) Spoke to a young chap from Korea who had had his photos from the Street Photography workshop printed and displayed. So polite and spoke good English.
10.03.11. Tried posting a photo from Flick onto my blog and the format has changed. I can't work out why this is - has anyone any suggestions? I'm so upset this has happened.
11.03.11. Robert arrived home before 8.30pm
12.03.11. Robert and I went to the Guardian Press Desk Day, 11.00am-4.00pm. Talks from Roger Tooth, head of photography, Jeff Moore Freelance photographer, Martin Godwin (reminded me of Michael Cain) and Martin Argles, both Guardian photographers. Great to hear what a real photographer does!
13.03.11. Lovely sunny day. After lunch Robert and I went to Hardwick Hall and went on a long circular walk. Robert took almost as many photos as me with his new camera, Canon S95. Home towards 5.00pm.
14.03.11. Busy day and Jewellery Class at Long Eaton in the evening. Sun just setting as I arrived at 10 past 6. Class went well, Simple Loops tonight, earrings and pendant set.
15.03.11. I have two adults taking exams this month, one tomorrow and one at the end of the month. Kate is also due to have her baby on 20th and I was expecting her to come at 10.30am for her last lesson. When she was a few minutes late, I wondered whether the baby was about to make an appearance. At 20 to 1 Kate texted to apologise for missing her lesson. They went to the hospital at 9.30am, and baby arrived at 11.00am. Can't wait to see this musical baby!
I missed my tap lesson as we had booked to see Mike Harding. The last time I saw him was 24 years ago when Robert was about 6 (?) months old. Well, the songs hadn't changed or the jokes...
16.03.11. Graham went off very early to a meeting in Basingstoke, called in the see his mum on the way back and was home by 7.30pm - that's what I call a round trip!
17.03.11. Found out I didn't get a place on a photography workshop at the Quad, but at least I know I am free to go the the NEC next week. The good news is I think I will get a place next month. Collected Lucy from the station at 7pm, home for a long week-end.
18.03.11. Change in the weather, bright and sunny. Went to Alfreton to visit an Oxfam shop, then on the the Designer Outlet, fell in love with some white shoes. Had lunch there, then headed back to go shopping in Derby, stopped off at Chester Green to take photos of the daffodils. Took camera to Westfield Centre expecting to see some Comic Relief activities, but instead found a Faces of Fashion show taking place. Models dressed up in designer garments and wore masks of famous people - no idea why! Fell in love with a jacket from New Look.
19.03.11. Graham busy with his 'proper' work. Took Lucy to Denby Pottery for lunch, but as got there so a coach load of people who all headed for the restaurant, so got back in the car and drove towards Matlock. Got stuck in traffic just outside Cromford caught up with a very nasty accident involving a motorcyclist and a car. Once past the accident, stopped off at Cromford Mill for lunch and then went on the Matlock via Starkholmes - have never been that way before. Lucy went to visit another Oxfam shop while I took some photos. When Lucy was finished we headed on to just beyond Bakewell where we visited the Magpie Mine. Lovely place for a family visit, made me feel nostalgic for little people.
20.03.11. Another lovely day. After Sunday lunch spent afternoon planting some seeds and doing some weeding. Great to be outdoors and gardening! Took Lucy to station for 6pm.
21.03.11. Went to the Derby Royal Hospital for a 10o'clock appointment for more acupuncture. Was a little late setting off, then there were no parking spaces etc etc and arrived 5 minutes late. Luckily clinic was running late too. As I left, I paid for the car park outside the hospital and by the time I had walked to the car and driven to the exit, the machine spat my ticket out saying I had over stayed my time. Strangely at the same time, it spat out some other tickets which had today's date on - hand written and said "use on entrance and exit". Not wanting to have to pay more on my ticket, I posted one of the tickets back in and hey presto the barrier opened...
22.03.11. You can tell the sun is out as emails for the website have reduced - hurray! Decided to take my camera to town and get some photos for the Amateur Photographer competition. This month's theme is 'Inside A Building'. Decided I would photograph the inside of the cathedral as in 31 years, I've hardly ever visited. The last time was last June for the funeral of a neighbour. I'd been there 5 minutes when the doors opened and in swarmed a class of eager school children. I stayed on another 5 minutes and then beat a hasty retreat. Inspiration was not going to happen with all those little voices around. Wasn't sure where to go, but headed down towards the Market Place, then realised that the best place to photograph the inside of a building and show of its architecture was the Market Hall with its beautiful arched ceiling. I'm not going to win any prizes for the photo I took as I couldn't get the light right, but still walked away with a sense of achievement as I know this was the right subject to choose.
23.03.11. Another sunny day... after lunch went back to Derby to re-take the photos at the Market Hall, hoping the light would be better in the afternoon - not so. When I arrived home, I found I'd missed a phone call from an editor of a magazine. After a quick cup of tea, returned the phone call and found myself in a conversation about taking some photos of Derby. Too late today, but can't wait for tomorrow and more good weather.
24.03.11. At last completed my Course Information Sheet for a new course at the Eco Centre in June. Tied up with piano lessons all morning, but free to go into Derby in the afternoon. It's lucky that the Photography Festival Format is on in Derby at the moment. Usually anyone armed with a camera in the middle of a Derby Street would not get a warm welcome, but today no one batted an eyelid. I learned a lot about Derby on my walk round, half of it is up for lease/sale. The city of Derby is struggling to combat the false wealth engineered by the opening of The Westfield Centre... Worked until nearly 9.30pm to get some of the photos in an email.
25.03.11. Another busy day coming up - spent at the NEC Birmingham talking to people who can and can't knit. Interesting and long with the added bonus of a Fashion show to photograph. Learned a lot - I'll never be a fashion photographer, you have to work so quickly and anticipate the brief moments when a model stands still enough for you to get a good photo - was fun trying! In Derby at 6.30pm and then food shopping on the way home.
26.03.11. A rather more gentle day today. Lunch at Denby Pottery and a trip to Derby shopping late afternoon. Found something in the 2 day Next sale that I liked and fitted me.
28.03.11. Graham left left early and drove down to Plymouth for a few days of important meetings, including one with the Board of Directors. I had to be up early and at the Derby Royal for my second session of acupuncture. No problems with car parking this week. Full day with normal work on website and 4 piano lessons, then off to Long Eaton for the last of my Jewellery classes and a quick 'feed back' session with my Line Manager. Home by 9.30pm and still another hour's work on Flickr...
29.03.11. Four more piano lessons, a trip out to the garden centre for a plant for a neighbour's 60th Birthday. Very dull day and heavy rain from 6pm. Took plant round to party, but didn't stay as off to Tap class - a bit tired.
30.03.11. Concerns over the future of the website led me to leave everything for an hour or so - went to Derby University to attend a talk about Street photography. Asked a question about a very lovely photo (reflections in a window in Oxford Street) and was assured it wasn't staged. Decided not to ask any more questions as my heart rate might not be able to cope! Home by 3.30pm. Graham arrived home around 7pm having driven almost non stop from Plymouth.
31.03.11. Bit of a traumatic day for me. More concerns about website, coupled with having to turn down 2 major offers of work as they clashed with things I'm already committed to - any other time or day would have been fine...
P.S. Since 10th March, the photos I've posted from Flickr have changed format - extra large with no proper frame. I'm really disappointed about this, but can't find out why. If anyone reads this and can help, I'd very much appreciate some help towards putting it right, thanks.

12.02.11. Brilliantly sunny warm (almost) day and a great day had at Rhyl, North Wales. These binoculars were in the window of the Lifeboat Building and just so reminded me of the 'Short Circuit' films.

Underneath The Arches...

08.02.11. On my way to record the floods at Darley Dale, I stopped off at Milford. I took lots of photos of the weir, but all were disappointing, except for this image of the old sluice gate. A little burnt out in the bright sunlight, but still quite pleasing to the eye...

Flooded Fields, Darley Dale...

08.02.11. The headline on yesterday's Derby Evening Telegraph was about flooding in Matlock and Darley Dale. Today, as the sun was shining, I decided to head off in search of the floods - still very much in evidence.

Pressed Flowers: Resin and Silver

05.02.11. Took Lucy to The Ferrers Centre for lunch and couldn't resist these earrings. They match a necklace and bracelet I already have. As luck would have it, I had forgotten to put any earrings in !

February 2011
01.01.11. Had an enquiry today from a lady wanting piano lessons for her three children and herself. As she said - she needs to find someone to go to her house. Do I want to take on four new pupils at once ... no, not really.
02.02.11. Was a little worried today that today would be a complete disaster as I had arranged with a friend to go to The Harley Gallery to view Nora Fok's exhibition of knitted Jewellery. Unfortunately, said friend cancelled at the last minute due to work commitments. I decided to go anyway as I had re-arranged piano lessons. As it turned out, it was a dull day illuminated by this trip, I had such a wonderful time. It was lovely to be greeted by the 'girl' on the reception desk as I'd said I was coming to visit and as I walked in, so did a journalist who had come to write an article for 'Crafts Magazine'. As we'd both come on our own we met up for lunch (which was wonderful) and had a really great chat about al things crafts. I'm hoping that Carla will get in touch at some time. An interesting contact for the future. The exhibition was just breathtaking, I can't recommend it enough. I have written about it at length here.
03.02.11. Second photo of the year published in the Derby Evening Telegraph. Caught up with work, took a trip to The Beetroot Tree in the afternoon to view their Erewash Open Exhibition. There was a nice selection of work, mostly paintings, but nothing that really stood out. Had asked another friend if they would like to come - she had to stay in as her roof was being mended.
04.02.11. Having spent 4 months waiting to be paid for some teaching work I did in July, somehow I was sent 2 duplicate cheques, so spent the morning composing a letter and returning them. Also posted a card and letter to my friend in Japan who I'd managed to send a Christmas Card to at the wrong address. Amazingly, it was returned so I am hopeful that we can get back in touch. Collected Lucy from town, home for the week-end.
05.02.11. Forecast correct, heavy rain all day. Took Lucy to Staunton Harold for lunch and a look around the galleries. Nice place to visit even in dreadful weather. Came home via Belper.
06.02.11. More heavy rain, miserable all day - caused flooding in Matlock and Darley Dale. Went out for lunch, but we were all disappointed.
07.02.11. Graham left early, took Lucy to her lift back to Oxford and caught the train to Plymouth (staying till Thursday). Lots of things to do on website. Rang up and arranged for the website address to be changed. All sorted by 3pm, but unfortunately I cannot post anything to the website, which is a tad frustrating. Fingers crossed it is nothing major.
08.02.11. Had a Flickrmail from a biologist who lives lives in Siena and would like to use a couple of my photos, sent a reply first thing. As the forecast said it would be the only sunny day of the week, decided to grab my camera and go and take some photos of yesterday's floods. Stopped off at Milford, lots of debris floating in the very high river. Then at Belper East Mill and then onto Rowsley via Bonsall. Had some lunch at Caudwell Mill - nearly didn't get any as they don't take 'plastic' in the cafe (as well as only serving vegetarian food). Luckily, the gift shop will give cash back. (thank you so much!) Eventually arrived at the flooded area of Darley Dale, just as the light was beginning to fade. Perhaps I should have headed straight there, but there wasn't much to photograph and I have found some new places for walks around Bonsall once the weather improves.
09.02.11. Stayed in and caught up with the website. Had a phone call from Ferrers Gallery to say the ring I had ordered was in - trip for tomorrow?
10.02.11. New adult piano pupil first thing. Not sure I can cope with a 9am lesson, but it's easiest for her to come straight from dropping child at school (Ockbrook).
Set off for Staunton Harold around 2.30pm, very muddy near Caulke Abbey (poor car!). Peter Kibbles's ring is beautiful. Went to town and took some paper work in to Oxfam that Lucy had left over the week-end. Graham was home by 5.00pm.
12.02.11. Hooray! At last a sunny day. Packed up the car and headed for the seaside (Rhyl). Had a few hiccups on the way. First we had a problem with the sat nav, having returned home briefly for an 'essential item' started the car again and no sound...not on the radio or the sat nav. Wasn't sure we could cope with a long journey and no radio, so stopped just before we got on the A50 (dual carriageway). Having turned the knob right up and detected that there was some sound, it just wasn't connected to the loud speaker. Switching the car back on returned the sound which I had turned full on. Well...after peeling ourselves off the ceiling (that was LOUD!) we carried on - the rest of the journey being quite uneventful except a 20 minute hold up on the M6. We'd not been to Rhyl before - it was lovely along the sea front and there are a huge number of wind turbines way out in the sea. Lunch wasn't quite as exciting, but a long walk afterwards hopefully burnt off all the chips we had eaten. Left at 5pm and arrived home around 8pm having stopped for a cup of tea on the motorway.
13.02.11. Spent much of today working on a card I wanted to make for Valentine's Day. I'd seen a really lovely card in a shop in Derby, but decided to take on the challenge of recreating it, rather than buying it for £2.75. The morning was taken up painting some extra long matches I had bought, first in white (three coats) then pink (two coats) and dipping them in 'Glamour Dust' (glitter to you). Took ages to photograph them as I wasn't happy with the background colour and then in the final moments, it all came together and I was almost happy with the result.
14.02.11. Valentine's Day. Didn't get as much response as I would have liked about my photo, but some people looked at it...
16.02.11. There was a letter in the Derby Evening Telegraph mentioning my photo. Apparently, it is an example of a Squeeze Stile... Had to go to the dentist as a tooth is 'playing up'. Was very disappointed to be told that yet another nerve has died and that I will need to come back in a fortnight to have a root filling. At least I wasn't in too much discomfort this time and I wasn't on holiday in Toronto, a mere 3500 miles from home...
17.02.11. Spent part of the day trying to design a new poster to help advertise my Jewellery Class which starts on 4th March. Graham and I went to town shopping. Bought some things and managed to leave the bag in the toilets in The Westfield. Went back, but resolved that they wouldn't be there. Was heartened to find they had in fact been handed in to the Concierge Station opposite Boots!
18.02.11. Went to three different libraries with posters about my class just before lunch. Had my hair cut just after lunch and then came home to catch up on the website. Had a phone call from my Line Manager at the Eco Centre about my courses in May and June and then a very long phone call about the website. Very lucky I was in. Graham and I went out to get fish and chips at 8pm, hoping that by the time we arrived back, Robert would be home. He turned up about 20 to 9, so ample time for a good chat before bedtime.
19.02.11 Graham off early to Bournmouth on train. Met up with mate and spent the day at The Sammy Miller museum, had a great time by all accounts and just as they were leaving Sammy Miller turned up and they were able to have a few words with him. Robert and I eventually headed off for The New Art Gallery at Walsall, stopping off for lunch at Heart Of The Country Shopping Village near Lichfield. Heading into deepest Walsall on such a dismal day was quite depressing, but the Art Galley is an amazing building and had some great exhibitions. The best one was the oil paintings of Frank Sydney Smith. Born in 1929, he didn't start painting until 1976 (seriously) attending adult education classes (good lad!). The paintings document his life, showing whatever your experience, you can share the up and downs with others through art. Another reason I was so drawn to this exhibition was because in a way Frank's life mirror's my dad's life. If only I could show everyone the things my dad has made... I have bought the book from eBay to send to my dad and hope he will find it interesting. Read about Frank Sydney Smith's life here
21.02.11. Up early and on the train to the NEC for the day to promote Craft Club. Denise was there demonstrating how to spin plarn and three local volunteers were really good at engaging the visitors. Saw a fashion show and took some photos, but nothing brilliant. Spent 2 hours on the website once I got home. (at 7)
22.02.11. Another busy day on the website and four piano pupils.
24.02.11. First sunny day for over a week and spent much of it in the car going to visit parents. I stopped off there and Graham went on to Cirencester to meet someone about his work. Once back, we took a trip to Burford Garden Centre. Was really the surprised that my mum and dad agreed to go and had a good look round and enjoyed tea and 'sticky buns - hooray! The only downside was that everything seemed so expensive, I doubt they'll want to go there again. Went out on my own and took a few sunset pictures - the colours are always so much more intense down there. Home by 8.15pm. Noticed one of my photos in the paper of Darley Abbey Mills. No credit, but recognise the seagulls.
25.02.11. Sent off my entry for APOY 11. One can hope...
26.02.11. Another freezing cold wet day. Went to Denby Pottery for lunch and saw art exhibition - one of the members is someone who teaches same subject as me at Derby City Council.
28.02.11. Graham's birthday, should I say how many? - one more than me! Had piano pupils in morning and teaching new class at Long Eaton in the evening, so not a quality day for Graham. Went to The Harvester for lunch (his choice) and a short stop at TCHarrion's to buy a liner for Graham's car and new mats for mine. Class at Long Eaton has 8 learners, so it will run, hooray! All very capable and all produced good work.

Road Mending...

30.01.11. I always try to take photos that are aesthetically pleasing, but made an exception today. Our road to Little Eaton is closed for 3 weeks (making a round trip of 10 instead of 3 minutes). I thought it might be interesting to photograph it while there was no one else around.

How To Make The Sun Come Out ... Wish...

27.01.11.
  1. Saturday 22nd January was a bit of a 'non day'. Miserable weather, didn't go out and didn't feel inspired to do anything constructive. By the evening, I was, as they say; bored, bored, bored, so bored in fact that I began looking through other blogs randomly. I went to my profile page and looked for people who had the same favourite film as me - 'Big' and clicked onto the list. Of those who had 'Big' listed I clicked on 'photography' wondering whether those with the same interests are just like me. The second blog I chose had the title 'Make Do And Mend' (very clever to have named a blog that, as the phrase is so popular) Amazingly, this blogger lives in Nottingham and as I read through all the interesting things she had done, one post really caught my eye... Ever heard of Vivian Maier? You will do soon. In 2007, a Real Estate agent in Chicago bought up a job lot of old negatives and stumbled on a wonderful collection of street photography taken by a single lady, who lived a solitary life whose passion was taking photos of people in every day Chicago. John Maloof understood immediately the importance of the work he had discovered and is now busy raising funds to make Vivian's life story into a docu-film. I can't wait...

Walk At Shipley Park...

Time To Reflect...
Originally uploaded by Geraldine Curtis
18.01.11. It's ages since we've been to Shipley Park and always nice to have a walk round there. I just caught the last of the afternoon light here - the bench has been added since our last visit...

Good Bye To Wayland...

12.01.11. We have recently lost a long standing member of our Lane. He was a very quiet individual who had run a model shop at Heanor for most of his life. Because he died just before Christmas, we didn't hear of his death until we read the long informative obituary in the paper. We were surprised to read that he was trained as a gemmologist and had held a pilot's licence. What we did know about was his love of flying model airplanes. Every summer he held a model airplane flying party in the field he owned on the Lane. We were always relieved when it finished and the whiney noise ceased, but I think we also envied him. What could be better than being able to fly model airplanes every day when you retire!
A couple of years back, he and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and we all attended a get together at their house. We were surprised to find that they had spent the previous night in a tent on the lawn, just as they had spent their first married night together. (In a tent, not on their lawn).
Our own memory of him will be the day Robert was doing revision work for his 'A' Levels in his room. We were conscious that a model airplane was being flown outside, but thought nothing of it - until there was a massive bang on the brickwork next to where Robert was sitting. The airplane had flown smack into the side of the house, missing the window by a few inches. When the plane was eventually retrieved, there was no apology, just a quiet mumble about it being a right-off...

Wishing Myself Back There...

... but not wanting to relive how cold it was...
January 2011
01.01.11 Happy New Year! Hope someone is reading this... As usual, today was a recovery day, not that we over indulged last night - just had a late night - not to mention the power cut.
02.01.11. Lucy's last day with us, so we went to The Spotted Cow for lunch. Our first meal out and it was delicious!
03.01.11. Graham is busy tinkering in the garage since it got a tiny bit warmer, so I elected to drive Lucy to Oxford as she starts work tomorrow. We stopped off for a walk round Bicester, which wasn't as exciting as we'd hoped, neither was the meal in the local pub. It was exceedingly cold and we were glad to get to Lucy's bedsit and warm up. Left at 4.30pm and arrived home around two hours later - diesel consumption over 51 mpg.
04.01.11
Three piano lessons today and first Tap class of the year.
05.01.11.
Acupuncture session at hospital - had to wait over half an hour, which is unusual. Funds much depleted so went to Ilkeston Hospital to collect £20 they owed me for materials from November.
06.01.11
Had a last Jewellery class at The Eco Centre at Wirksworth, 1-3pm. This was delayed from last year due to the snow. The class was also very nearly cancelled as they have since had a fire. It was quite odd sitting in the foyer part with only just enough light to see what we were doing and having work men shouting down instructions from the roof (to each other) - slightly reminiscent of Nigel's demise in The Archers...
07.01.11. Busy day on the website. Shopping in the afternoon. Graham came with me and havinf gone our separate ways met up for a very welcome cup of tea. We needed fortifying before teh weekly food shop.
08.01.11. Miserable weather so didn't plan any excursions, instead read up all day about using Precious Metal Clay (I've had the kit and the book for years) By the end of the afternoon I had 14 delicate tiny daisies. Left the house at 10 to 7 and went to town. Bought tickets for The King's Speech at The Quad and then had tea at Nandos (after a wait of 15 minutes). The film was as good if not better than all the rave reviews. At last a film of real quality. Another 'first', the cinema was packed to capacity!
09.01.11. Cooked lunch, went for a walk and then fired my PMC with Graham's help. I did it all on my own, but in the garage so I couldn't set fire to anything. Graham just set the timer so I knew how long I was firing each piece. I felt quite experienced by the end and from the fact that I managed to melt one of the pieces (the second). It taught me a very valuable lesson about how hot the torch is and where to position the flame. Now, I just need to learn how to drill holes in silver...
10.01.11 Busy morning with piano pupils and emails to answer. Ordered supplies for workshop later in the week.
11.01.11. My second acupuncture session. Home for some lunch and then out for appointment to see the 'Visitor Experience Manager' at Kedleston Hall. It was wonderful visiting the place while no one else was there and being led through room not usually open to the public. Fingers crossed for some workshops...
12.01.11. When the phone call late November to ask me to do another workshop for Marston's employees, I was thrilled as I'd not heard from them for nearly a year and thought that with money being tight, craft session for employees had fallen by the way. Not as well attended as in previous times, but those who came really enjoyed making button bracelets with chain and jump rings.
14.01.11. Had my fingers crossed that I everyone would return for my Friday jewellery class. I knew some of them thought the cost was a bit prohibitive, but still had hope. In the event, only three turned up, four thought it too expensive and one is seriously ill. Net result class will be cancelled after the third week. Consoled myself with purchases from Primark.
15.01.11. Graham set up his drill (on a frame) and left me to it. Was 95% happy with the overall result.
16.01.11. Bit of a non day due to torrential rain. Took a few bits and bobs over to Lucy's Line manager to be delivered to her.
17.01.11. Lucy's first day in her new job. No longer 'Assistant Buyer', she is now 'Assistant Merchandiser, New Products'. Graham went off to Plymouth at the crack of dawn. Finally got round to getting my new lens carefully out of it's box and took some macro photos. Think I have a lot to learn... First sunny day in ages, went to Little Eaton for walk.
18.01.11.Went for walk around Shipley Park - nice lighting, had to be back for 4pm. Graham home 5.00pm.
19.01.11. Graham went to Basingstoke via Cirencester and back. Went out a second time to Shipley park to get the photos I wanted (with little success). Had a meeting at Village at 5pm, back for piano lesson at 6.30pm.
20.01.11. Meeting in London to talk through the redesigning of the website. Good to meet up with Julie our 'in house' computer whizz. Day went relatively smoothly. Pity no chance to see any of London other than the inside of Vapiano - specialises in pasta and pizzas - just my luck...
21.01.11. Graham spent day at Model Engineer's Show in London. Having gone really early we was back in Derby by 3.30pm... Second Jewellery Class at Village. As I mentioned last week, we only had three, two of who are mother and daughter. Today they brought along daughter/granddaughter. I wonder if anyone else has had three generations of the same family in their class?
Normal afternoon, catch up on website, shopping round town and then food shopping.
23.01.11. As it looks as though I won't be teaching after next Friday, I have started a new blog in the hope that I can advertise my classes, or what I can teach on it in the hope that people will find it. It is called (after much head scratching) beadandcraftwithme
24.01.11. Graham went off to Plymouth by train and won't be back until Thursday. Only 2 piano lessons today. I did have an enquiry from someone on Saturday, but they didn't show up...
25.01.11. Sarah's birthday. Busy day on website, only 2 piano lessons and then off to tap. Weather is freezing again.
26.01.11. Spent all available time taking some photos of balls of wool for a Press Release and then the comment came back: "very nice but need landscape, not portrait aspect". Took some more, but didn't turn out so well. Did however learn about the magnetic lasso tool in Photoshop, after a quick phone call to Lucy. 4 Piano lessons today.
27.01.11. Up early and out of the house by 9.15am. I even set the Sat Nav in my car, which was a first, but I felt I would need it and so persevered! Arrived in Bamford just after 10.30am to spend the day with Claire who I have asked to take over the writing of the UKHKA newsletters. I have every confidence in her ability as a writer. I just hope nothing puts her off. We went out to a nearby restaurant for lunch, but I made the mistake of forgetting to mention that I'd rather not have the béarnaise sauce on my salmon. Ugh! I've only just had the courage to look up what's in it... I was surprised to learn (as well as all the other things we have in common) that Claire is allergic to potatoes, something I've never come across before. After lunch I just had to see the Ladybower Reservoir, as we were so close (yards). I walked across the dam and Claire went back and waited in the car as it was perishing. Luckily , the sun came out almost on cue! Next we went back to Claire's house and a lovely open fire and got down to work. I left as it was time to collect son from Primary school and I was home just after 4.30pm. (Graham home)
28.01.11. I had a call on Tuesday enquiring about jewellery classes, but the two people mentioned didn't turn up, so after the class, I put in my pay claim and left with no one to say good-bye to. Graham and I went shopping in the afternoon, our new routine, but I soon lost heart and we came home.
29.01.11. Didn't get out today, so took the plunge and made some PMC rings. Not sure if they will fit, the book says to make them two sizes bigger to allow for shrinkage. Was quite stressful trying to tame the pliable clay into a ring shape and only managed to get one of the four to form a join.
30.01.11. Spent more time armed with PMC paste and hair drier and coaxed the rings into complete circles. Had ham from Croots for Sunday lunch. Theirs are the nicest hams I have ever eaten! Went for a walk along the road almost down to Little Eaton after lunch. The road has been closed all week and I wanted to see what progress they had made. So hope they complete ahead of schedule, it takes so much time to go all the way round!
