Willington Power Station

Sunday 1st March

Weather beautiful, if a little chilly. Felt I had to get out and record the event. Lucy not really up to going out, but was happy to come for the ride.
Even the disused cooling towers looked good today...

Mercia Marina, Newly Decked Out...

Discovered a new Marina near Willington, so stopped for a look and a quick walk round.

Through The Arch...

I've never stopped in Repton before. The old school buildings are full of historic attributes. We've all heard so much about the place, but how much do we actually know...?

IN BRIEF

24.02.09
Jewellery Class, making necklaces with wire bouillon. Worked well in theory, thread lengths of bouillon onto wire and make simple loops. In practice, students chose colours they liked rather than size they could work with. Something to think about next time...
25.02.09
Card Making, a touch of Origami this week. Only had four students, but just as hectic as they bombarded me with questions and enthusiasm.
26.02.09
Worked all day on website. Long chat about preparations for taking knitting into schools.
26.02.09
Should have been very exciting day for Lucy as she has interview for a work placement. Unfortunately, the person organising it was called away at the last minute and Lucy has tummy bug. Obviously not meant to be today. Lucy decided that she was well enough to meet up in Birmingham and we took Sarah out to lunch at the museum - a belated birthday present. Quick look around and then a long walk around the shops. Home by 6.00pm (Interview has been rescheduled for next Tuesday).
27.02.09
Work and then some tidying up in time for 11.00am when acquaintance from teaching was coming for coffee. Unfortunately, she took the scenic route via Chaddesden and was late, then had to leave early, but lovely to have a chat, however small, all the same.
On way to collecting Lucy from station, called in on Graham's work colleague to give him Graham's Birthday card (he is travelling to America tomorrow) and then went shopping.

28.02 09
Graham's Birthday
Not sure what sort of a day it would have been if Graham had been at home. - I had to attend a tutor meeting all morning. It was quite a jolly affair, but I'm not sure taking three quarters of an hour to do introductions was a valuable use of our time...
After lunch Lucy and I had a quick trip out to Hucknall and then came home again...

Trip To Buxton...

Saturday 21st February

We didn't manage to get off very early, but went to Buxton for a late lunch, a walk round and to take a few photographs.
It was absolutely freezing.

Inside the Glass House...

The Pavillion Gardens provided a welcome relief from the cold. We also found a Craft Fair to have a look round.

They Don't Make Them Like They Used To...

Found the Museum and had a quick look round just before it closed. They had an interesting display of 'Fashion' which was composed of a few choice garments, looking as though they'd been begged/borrowed/stolen and a short explanation of when they'd be purchased and what event they'd been worn to. The best description was about a collar. The person explained that during the war, she been desperate to find a blouse to go with a plain black skirt she owned. Not being able to find one she liked/could afford, she'd ended up wearing her pyjama top back to front and sewing on the collar - I would have loved to have seen a photo!!

Sunset Over Longnor...

Came home a scenic route and eventually found a place to stop and take some photos of the sunset.
The colours in the sky were amazing...
IN BRIEF

14.02.09
Valentine's Day!
We'd decided not to spend money on cards and flowers :( this year, instead we went to the Spotted Cow at Holbrook with Lucy and enjoyed a marvellous meal.
Graham busy packing for tomorrow, so went for a walk on my own.

15.02.09
Got up and said 'Good Bye' to Graham and went back to bed (it was only 5.30am) Nice leisurely day as no lessons to prepare as it's Half term this week!
Took Lucy to station at half past 7 and came home to an empty house.

16.02.09
Had a strange phone call from the surgery (they wouldn't say anything) wanting to speak to Graham. Later the nurse phoned to explain that whoever had done Graham diabetic check up on Friday hadn't realised that blood tests taken on a Friday have to be sent off by 3pm ( the appointment was 4.40pm), so the blood had to be thrown away and he needs to come in for another sample. Seeing as it's taken about 2 months to get Graham to go to this check up, he's not going to be best pleased when he finds out. I think I'll tell him when he gets back...(in three weeks time...)

17.02.09
Big day today, my day out at Craft, Hobby and Stitch International at the NEC. Wasn't sure that Hermione was going to let me go, but we had a lovely time catching up with everyone and meeting some new contacts. Some interesting ideas mooted...
Home by 6.45pm, then had to put out the recycling - after checking with the next door neighbour what the new rules are that meant our recycling was left last collection day. Next check emails only to find I'm expected to find 10 knitters to appear on the Richard and Judy Show tomorrow afternoon. After a few frantic phone calls, I then discover that contrary to my assumption they want ladies over 60, not under 30...
All in a day's work, went to bed feeling decidedly tired...

18.02.09
Received another payslip from Matlock, which still doesn't look correct. Phoned to see if I could sort it out, but no one there as it's half term. So phoned the tax office at Nottingham and think I made myself understood... will have to wait and see!

19.02.09
Did some hoovering today and tried to make the house just a little tidier than of late.
Really busy week on the website.

20.02.09
Phoned up about applying to take workshops at our new Arts Centre in Derby called 'The Quad'. Sounds too complicated to get involved in, so sent an email so they have my contact details, but have not heard anything back. Will have to think of something else...

An Illuminated Evening....

Friday 13th February

This was the scene that greeted us at The Market Place

Four Wheels...

Couldn't decide which of the four photos to include, so used then all!

Illuminating....

This balloon was at Nottingham Castle. It didn't go anywhere and could only be photographed when they fired the gas cylinder.
IN BRIEF

07.02.09
Today I should have been up early and off to Belper to take a Silk Painting Workshop. This was cancelled due to lack of interest. Instead, with newly fallen snow, I took Graham to Brackley Gate to photograph the white fields. It was unfortunate,  but due to a combination of circumstances, I did some serious damage to Hermione this morning. So that was it for the weekend, deep depression wondering how much damage had been done or whether this was just another blip on the road to recovery...

09.02.09
Busy morning, then off to Jewellery Class to make a bracelet by sewing beads on to a piece of knitting wire. Knitted wire is a brilliant material, I wish I had more time to use it to its full potential - one of my favourite projects.

10.02.09
When the chaps came last Wednesday to fix a new front door and side panel, they collected the glass only to find the side panel pattern didn't match the front door. They came today to fit the correct pattern - all completed in a matter of minutes, hoorah!
Card Making at Alfreton was Spirelli technique, another favourite of mine. Have managed to convince the manager there that if we continue with card making after half term, there will be enough (learners) to run it. (Instead of changing to silk painting)

11.02.09
With Graham off to America on Sunday, I needed my car serviced before he went and today was the day. It seems an ideal situation for him to take my car in as he works across the road from T.C. Harrisons, but all the best laid plans... At the last minute Graham had arranged a meeting in London and needed the car sorted as early as possible. However, my poor car managed to fail it's MOT and by the time they'd replaced the offending  brake pads etc and he'd come home to collect overnight bag and swap cars, he was very close to missing his train and meeting - I was not popular... (He did catch the train by the skin of his teeth and did have a successful meeting)

12.02.09
Worked on website all morning. Went to town in the afternoon for a much needed change of scenery, put some money in the bank and bought Graham a selection of shirts from Primark. At £3.00 a shirt, he may as well take an armful and leave them there. What would we do without Primark...?

13.02.09.
Following on from last week's workshop making earrings in Burton, I have been contacted by one of the learner's mum who organises speakers for her WI. Today I spent ages writing an email explaining who I was and what I could give talks/workshops in. I was very disappointed when she wrote back saying they already have someone giving a talk about knitting - which wasn't on the list!!
Graham came home after lunch and we set off to go to Ilkeston Hospital for a routine Diabetic eye test- where they put drops in to dilate your pupils, then take a flash photo of the inside of your eye. If you didn't have something wrong with your eyes before they do this, then you most probably will after! After that we had to drive to Derby to collect Lucy from the train, then back to the doctors to have his yearly Diabetic test done.
Having dropped Graham off at home, Lucy and I went off to do the food shopping at Morrisons.
There was a special event at Nottingham tonight, when all the main buildings are illuminated with different coloured lights, their 'Light Night'. I'd been looking forward to go for weeks, but after a busy afternoon and doing all the driving, it looked as though we wouldn't be able to fit it in. However, Graham was really sweet about it and agreed that we should go, especially as he was keen to try out the park and ride trams. Although Hermione wasn't happy, she survived the night well, all things considered and I had a great time using my new Canon IXUS 980 for the first time.
